David Ferrer produced a ruthless display to end the Australian Open run of Richard Gasquet. The fifth seed had too much quality for the Frenchman, who had impressed during the first week in Melbourne. A third-round demolition of Janko Tipsarevic had suggested that Gasquet was capable of taking out Ferrer, but the Spaniard had other ideas and stormed to a 6-4 6-4 6-1 victory on the Hisense Arena. Ferrer cracked 36 winners to his opponent's 16 and broke serve no fewer than seven times en route to his comfortable win. The world number five reached the semi-finals here 12 months ago but with a meeting with top seed Novak Djokovic awaiting in the quarter-finals he faces a tough task to be able to replicate that.
