Bristol City have signed midfielder Josh Brownhill from fellow Sky Bet Championship side Preston.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Barnsley, helping the Reds win promotion from Sky Bet League One via the play-offs and also clinch the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Brownhill briefly played under City boss Lee Johnson at Oakwell before the manager left for Ashton Gate in February.

Johnson told the Robins' official website: "Josh is a young, hungry, sought-after player who is experienced beyond his years in modern day football, and we've beaten off competition from other clubs to get him.

"On a human level, as well as being a good footballer he's also a fantastic character - one of the nicest guys you could meet - and he's very determined to do well for Bristol City."

Former Manchester United trainee Brownhill was out of contract at Deepdale but Preston have confirmed he was offered a new deal which means City will have to pay compensation for his services because he is under 24.
