Lewis Grabban will undergo a medical at Sunderland on Wednesday ahead of a season-long loan move from Bournemouth, Sky sources understand.
Grabban re-joined Bournemouth for a second spell in the summer of 2015, having previously played for the club between 2012 and 2014, with the Cherries paying £7m to secure him from Norwich.
The 29-year-old has only made 18 league appearances in the two seasons since, however, and spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan at Reading.
He made 16 appearances for the Royals in the Championship last season, scoring three times.
Grabban would be manager Simon Grayson's fifth signing of the summer, having already permanently captured winger Aiden McGeady from Everton and forward James Vaughan from Bury.
The Blacks Cats have also brought in Everton full-backs Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning on season-long loan deals.
