Sunderland have made a bid of £900,000 for Bury striker James Vaughan.
Black Cats boss Simon Grayson confirmed the club are in talks to sign the 28-year-old, who enjoyed a successful 2016/17 campaign for the League One side.
Vaughan scored 24 goals from 37 appearances last season after joining The Shakers from Birmingham.
He represented England at U17, U19 and U21 level and holds the record of the Premier League's youngest goalscorer, having netted for Everton in 2005 aged 16 years and 271 days.
Newly-relegated Sunderland are looking to replace the departed Jermaine Defoe and Vaughan has experience at Championship level, having made 86 appearances and scored 31 goals for Huddersfield before leaving in 2016.
A spell with Blues followed, but Vaughan struggled to make an impact and left by mutual consent after nine months at the club before going on to reinvent himself at Bury.
