Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is in talks over a return to former club AC Milan on loan, according to Sky sources.

It is understood the 25-year-old Italy international met Milan boss Sinisa Mihajlovic in Italy this weekend to discuss the potential move.

According to sources in Italy, Mihajlovic has agreed for Balotelli to return to San Siro and the player would be happy to join the club too, leaving Milan and Liverpool to negotiate a deal.

It is being reported in Italy that Liverpool have agreed to cover part of his £100,000-a-week wages to allow the loan move to go through.

Milan were interested in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who shares the same agent as Balotelli - Mino Raiola - but it is believed Paris Saint-Germain do not want to sell the Sweden striker at present.

Raiola stated earlier this year that Balotelli would not be leaving Liverpool but Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said in July that he was unsure where the player's future resides.

He said: "I'm not sure - that'll be entirely up to Mario. He's working very hard to get fit and that's something we'll see when the season begins.

"Mario was obviously not on the pre-season tour, but he's been training well back at Melwood with a number of other players."

Balotelli had a troubled first season at Liverpool in which he scored just one Premier League goal in 10 starts.
