Stuart Barnes says England's World Cup failures were on the pitch and not off it

The fallout of England's early exit from the 2015 World Cup has begun in earnest with the rumour mill working overtime.

The RFU had to confirm that England coach Mike Catt and fly-half Danny Cipriani had a training-ground bust-up but denied it almost caused a mutiny among the players.

However Stuart Barnes says the story only highlights the immense pressure England are under to try to explain their World Cup failure.

"If England were still in the World Cup we would not be talking about this," Barnes told Sky Sports News.

"This is not about Cipriani and Catt but rather that England have failed in the World Cup.

"A lot of people in the media find it easier to reflect the failure of the team on things going on off the pitch - it's easier than a tactical analysis of what has gone wrong on the pitch.

"England's main faults are on the pitch - this story is interesting as it shows that no team is ever that tight and when the pressure comes on, then cracks appear."

England play their final Pool A game against Uruguay on Saturday and Barnes is surprised they have not used this opportunity to begin the rebuilding process for the 2019 World Cup in Japan, having named their team earlier this week.

"I would have liked to have seen George Ford and Owen Farrell play 10 and 12 twice last autumn - doing it know when England are out of the World Cup seems really crazy to me.

"Owen Farrell always seems to be in the team and against Uruguay England are not going to need his goal-kicking.

"I am disappointed that Sam Burgess is not starting. I find it astonishing that he played against Wales, he was on the bench for the other two games and now when they should be building and have four years to do it, they decide not to bother with him.

"England need a management team who know how to win things and who have been around the block 20 times. This lot are not winners and they have not got the experience.

"Ian Ritchie [RFU chief executive] does not need that big a review - England need to start again, we need fresh blood as management."
