Matt Giteau’s Australia career could be over after breaking his ankle during the defeat to New Zealand

Matt Giteau’s Australia career could be over after breaking his ankle during the defeat to New Zealand.

The utility back, who has played 103 times for his country, lasted 10 minutes of the 42-8 loss to New Zealand on Saturday and will play no further part in the Rugby Championship campaign.

Giteau, who turns 34 next month, had returned from Toulon in French rugby in an attempt to secure a place back in the Wallabies' squad.

Australia coach Michael Cheika also confirmed that Rob Horne is set to have shoulder reconstruction surgery and will miss the rest of the tournament which includes games against South Africa and Argentina.

Coach Michael Cheika faces a selection headache ahead of the return Test in Wellington on Saturday to keep alive the three-match Bledisloe Cup series against the All Blacks.

"Matt's got a bit of a break in his leg at the top of his leg and a bit of a fracture in his ankle," Cheika said. "He's disappointed but he's also very realistic.

"He's a pro. He knows that he's still got to get himself right and get back to his club commitments for later in the season so that's what he'll be doing."

Giteau hobbled out of the game to be replaced by back Matt Toomua, who in turn was forced off with concussion.

The veteran, who came on the field on crutches after full-time, has now featured in 10 unsuccessful Bledisloe Cup campaigns against the All Blacks.
