Sale Sharks have missed out on the signing of South Africa lock Juandre Kruger, who is set instead to join Toulon.

Kruger agreed a move to the Aviva Premiership side in March, but the Racing 92 player is staying in France to join the multiple European champions.

The 30-year-old, who has won 17 Springboks caps, has been playing for the Paris-based side since 2013.

A statement from the Sharks said it "became apparent in the last week that Juandre and his family would not settle in Manchester."

And director of rugby Steve Diamond said: "Regardless of reputation, my recruitment drive, as always, will be based on people who have ambition and want to wear the shirt of Sale Sharks."

Diamond also confirmed his desire to add a lock and a winger to his squad before the 2016-17 season kicks off.
