Spinner takes 6-42 as West Indies set vulnerable target
A six-wicket haul from Saeed Ajmal put Pakistan in a position to chase down victory after the third day of the first Test against West Indies in Guyana.
The off-spinner took career-best figures of 6-42 as the hosts collapsed to 152 all out in their second innings, leaving Pakistan a target of 219 to win.
Their chase got off to a nightmare start as they lost their first three wickets for just two runs but a dogged fourth-wicket stand between Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq left them well set on 80-3 at the close.
Taufeeq Umar and Azhar Ali both fell to Ravi Rampaul for ducks in the second over before Kemar Roach struck in the next to trap Mohammad Hafeez lbw for two.
But Shafiq (40 not out) and Misbah (34no) stepped in to steady the ship and will resume on the fourth day with the tourists needing another 139 runs for victory.
Earlier in the day the Windies limped from 34-2 at the start of play to 96-7 at lunch, before going on to add just another 56 runs after the interval.
Wickets
Ajaml was the chief tormentor, beating his previous best figures of 5-69 set the day before to claim a total of 11 wickets in the match.
Nightwatchman Roach was the first wicket of the morning to fall as he was trapped lbw by Ajmal for only three.
Wahab Riaz then dismissed opener Lendl Simmons (21), with Azhar taking the catch at short leg, before Ramnaresh Sarwan (11) became Ajmal's third victim to reduce the hosts to 59-5.
Brandon Nash added only three to the total before he was run out, while Ajmal claimed the scalp of Carlton Baugh (seven), who holed out to Umar Akmal at mid-wicket
Darren Sammy (nine) was removed by Abdur Rehman before Ajmal completed his second five-for of the match when Azhar caught Rampaul (two) at short leg.
However, Pakistan were frustrated by a 10th wicket stand of 48 between Shivnarine Chanderpaul (36no) and Devendra Bishoo (24) that could yet prove crucial, before Ajmal grabbed the final wicket when Bishoo was caught by Akmal.
