Lancashire all-rounder Tom Smith has announced his retirement from first-class cricket because of injury.

Smith battled back from back surgery last season to return to county action, having missed almost the entire 2015 campaign after having been named as captain.

The 31-year-old had progressed through Lancashire's academy system and made his first-class debut in 2005 before breaking through by taking 35 County Championship wickets in 2006.

Smith was part of the Lancashire squad that was crowned county champion in 2011 and he was also called up by England Lions in 2014.

His career comes to a close after scoring 8,790 runs and taking 241 wickets for Lancashire, with his only spell away from the county coming with a loan move to Leicestershire in 2008.

Smith said: "It's with great sadness that I've had to retire from the professional game due to injury.

"Following medical advice and recently becoming a father my long term health is most important at this time.
