William Fox-Pitt, Andy Murray, Michael Phelps, rugby sevens and more

Great Britain's William Fox-Pitt faces a near-impossible task if his fairy-tale Olympic return is to end with gold medals on a busy fourth day at Rio.

The show-jumper was aiming for the top prize during the eventing team and individual finals on Tuesday just months after a fall left him in a coma for two weeks.

However his horse Chilli Morning ran around a fence to incur penalty points that leave him in individual 21st place and the GB team seventh in the team event.

But in order for Fox-Pitt to add to Team GB's tally he must overcome Germany - the champions from London 2012 and the 2014 World Equestrian Championships - who are heavily favoured to triumph again.

As well as Fox-Pitt and Team GB's show-jumpers, swimmer Siobhan-Marie O'Connor is gunning for a gold medal.

The 2014 Commonwealth champion and world championship bronze-medallist is competing in the women's 200m medley but faces tough competition from the Hungarian representative.

The women's gymnastics team - Elissa Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Amy Tinkler, Rebecca Downie and Ruby Harrold - are into the team final after coming fourth in the previous round.

Andy Murray, a gold medallist at London 2012, continues the defence of his tennis men's singles title. He's in second-round action against Juan Monaco, the world No 107.

Giles Scott gets the sailing underway, while the men's hockey team play the hosts Brazil. And as rugby sevens begins its first Olympic campaign, GB's men face Kenya and Japan. David Florence (two-time Olympic silver medal winner) will go for gold in the men's canoe slalom.

Alice Schlesinger competes for GB in the women's judo - she was an Israel representative until 2014, winning bronze in their colours at the world championships.

Going for gold

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian ever, has already won a gold medal in Rio but can aim for a second on Tuesday. The American is going for a 21st Olympic gold in the men's swimming (4x200m free relay).

There are also gold medal events in the diving (women's synchro 10m), fencing (men's individual), judo (men's -81kg, women's -63kg), shooting (women's 25m pistol), weightlifting (men's 69kg, women's 63kg).

The arrival of rugby sevens has propelled Fiji from also-rans to overwhelming favourites for a gold medal. Despite over 100 athletes competing in various Olympic sports since 1956, Fiji have never won a medal - they kick off their rugby sevens challenge on Tuesday. They are coached by an Englishman, Ben Ryan.
