Team GB won just two silver medals on day four - both in the pool.
Siobhan-Marie O'Connor took silver in the 200m individual medley before the men's 4x200m freestyle team repeated the feat 20 minutes later.
It was a barren day up to that point for the Brits, who produced some good performances and progressed in several events but came away with just two swimming silvers to show for their efforts.
O'Connor almost caught gold medallist Katinka Hosszu in the final few strokes of their race but the Hungarian produced a classy performance to lead throughout and take the win.
Duncan Scott, Stephen Milne, Dan Wallace and James Guy then produced a superb performance to finish second to a Michael Phelps-led United States in the men's 4x200m freestyle.
The team were seventh in the early stages but fought back to fourth and superb final leg from Guy clinched silver.
Elsewhere at the pool, Andrew Willis recorded a personal best time of 2:07.73 in the 200m breaststroke semi to advance to the final but fellow Brit Craig Benson posted 2:10.93 for seventh place and missed out.
Scott finished fourth in the men's 100m freestyle semi-final with a time of 48.20 to progress to tomorrow's final.
Andy Murray continued his comfortable progress with a straight sets win over Juan Monaco in the second round of the men's singles.
British No 1 Johanna Konta also progressed to the quarter-finals, but had to battle back from a set down to complete a gruelling 3-6 7-5 7-5 win over eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Serena Williams bowed out of the women's singles after losing 6-4 6-3 to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.
Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson recorded a personal best in finishing fifth in the women's synchronised 10m platform final and veteran show-jumper William Fox-Pitt had to settle for a 12th-place finish in the eventing individual jumping final.
Japan were a conversion away from drawing with Team GB, but their last-gasp kick was missed and Tom Mitchell's men held out for a 21-19 victory.
The women's gymnastics team produced a brilliant team performance to finish fifth, while the men's hockey team routed Brazil 9-1.
