Jamaica's Elaine Thompson claimed the sprint double with victory in the final of the women's 200m at the Olympic Games in Rio.
Thompson made the most of a fast start to edge out Dutch superstar Dafne Schippers, while Britain's Dina Asher-Smith just missed out on the medals in fifth.
The 100m champion made a blistering start and was well clear of the field at the halfway stage, but Schippers made up ground all the way to the line.
Thompson eventually won by a tenth of a second, crossing the line in 21.78s, with America's Tori Bowie claiming bronze in 22.15s.
Asher-Smith was prominent early but could not find a strong finish and crossed the line in 22.31.
There was agony for Team GB's Cindy Ofili in the final of the 100m hurdles where she finished fourth, two-hundredths of a second outside the medals.
Ofili was edged out by Kristi Castlin for a bronze medal as the United States took all three medals.
Brianna Rollins stormed to victory in 12.48s ahead of compatriot Nia Ali with Castlin's time of 12.61 just beating Ofili, whose elder sister Tiffany Porter finished back in seventh.
Jazmin Sawyers fared best of the British pair in the long jump final but she finished a distant eighth behind another American winner, Tianna Bartoletta.
Bartoletta jumped a personal best 7.17m to win gold ahead of compatriot Brittney Reese, who came within 2cm of snatching victory with her final jump.
Ivana Spanovic claimed bronze for Serbia with a jump of 7.08m with Sawyers' best of 6.69m coming in the early stages - team-mate Lorraine Ugen failed to make it to the last three rounds.
Wednesday's other final saw a Kenyan win in the 3,000m steeplechase, courtesy of Conseslus Kipruto.
Kipruto beat America's Evan Jager with ease, but there was controversy later on when bronze medal winner Ezekiel Kemboi was disqualified on appeal.
Kemboi was harshly adjudged to have stepped off track after jumping the water, with an appeal from France seeing their competitor Mahiedine Mekhissi promoted to third.
And another American gold could be on the cards in the decathlon, where Ashton Eaton holds a 121-point lead at the end of the first day.
Eaton extended his lead in the closing 400m and his 4,621 point haul sees him with a handy advantage over Germany's Kai Kazmirek (4,500) and Damian Warner of Canada (4,489).
