Frankie Gavin will headline a show in his hometown of Birmingham for the first time since 2010 when he challenges Chris van Heerden for the IBF International Welterweight title on May 9.
Gavin takes on California-based South African van Heerden, who beat Matthew Hatton in Johannesburg two years ago, at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena, live and exclusive on Sky Sports.
It will be Gavin’s second fight under new promoter Eddie Hearn and is Matchroom Sport’s first major show in the second city in 13 years.
The former world amateur champion fights on the undercard of Kell Brook’s first IBF world title defence in Sheffield on March 28, as he chases a future showdown with ‘The Special One’.
“It’s a massive fight for me and a huge one for my first big night in Birmingham,” Gavin said.
“Fighting in Birmingham means so much to me and now I am going to do so in a massive fight as the headliner of a great bill. It’s time to get my profile up, get happy, get winning, looking good again and getting on the path to a world title.”
World-rated middleweight Matthew Macklin, Stourbridge youngster Sam Eggington and brothers Kal and Gamal Yafai are all set to feature on the action-packed show next month.
