Paulie Malignaggi will return to the ring after a 16-month break to take on the unbeaten Danny Garcia at welterweight on August 1.

Malignaggi, who has been working as a pundit on the Sky Sports boxing team, has not fought since he was stopped in the fourth round by Shawn Porter in April 2014.

The Brooklyn native will return in front of his home fans with Garcia agreeing to take the fight at the Barclays Center, where he has already fought four times, most recently beating Lamont Peterson on points in April.

Malignaggi said: "Although I have a ton of respect for Danny and his father Angel, both for what they have accomplished in the ring as well as the bond they share as father/son I, like them, am a competitor through and through and in this sport it's all about testing yourself against the elite.

"So I look forward to defending my home turf of Brooklyn and matching my skills against Danny's at the Barclays Center."

Garcia has won all 30 of his fights, 17 of those via knockout, and he now steps up to welterweight after his last two wins came in catchweight contests at 142 and 143lbs.

He added: "It's going to be a great fight on August 1. I am looking forward to getting into the ring again, in my fifth appearance at Barclays Center, and putting on a great show for the east coast fans in attendance and fight fans all over the world."
