Michael Conlan has become the first male boxer from Ireland to win a senior world amateur boxing title after beating Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan in Doha.

Conlan, who is captain of the Ireland team, secured victory by a unanimous points decision in the bantamweight final at the World Championships despite being knocked down late on.

The 23-year-old was felled by a right hook in the closing stages of the third round but had enjoyed the better of the bout until then and held on to win 30-27, 29-28, 29-27.

Conlan adds world glory to the Olympic bronze medal he won in London in 2012 and his European and Commonwealth titles.

"I am a bit embarrassed at getting knocked down in the last round," he told the BBC.

"He hit me sweet on the chin and it was the best punch I have ever been hit with, but I recovered quickly and I am really happy."

He joins Katie Taylor as the only Irish fighters to win AIBA world titles, with Taylor due to go for her sixth in Kazakhstan early next year.
