Katie Taylor lost her first world championship bout in 11 years after she was beaten by France’s Estelle Mossely on Thursday.

The former Sky Academy Sports Scholar was looking to secure her sixth world crown but Mossely got the better of her in their semi-final bout in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Taylor impressed during the early stages of the tournament, but her final bout proved more challenging. Though she did secure the first round in a tight two-minute contest.

The second round was equally close, with Mossely getting the nod on two of the cards after landing some impressive punches.

Taylor looked tired in the third round as her opponent found her range and landed a succession of powerful shots, although the Olympic champion showed her spirit to take the round.

The final round was also closely contested but Mossely did enough to edge the contest after securing a split-points decision.

"I have another chance thankfully in the Olympic Games, so we will see how that goes," Taylor told The Irish Times.

"We didn't know how it was going because we don't get scores between rounds. I'm just not sure. It's hard to say just after a fight. I'll have to obviously look back at the video and see what went wrong.

"My plan was to come over here and make history. Unfortunately, that didn't happen."
