Joshua vs Molina: Callum Smith will stay on course for world title fight if he extends unbeaten record
Wednesday 30 November 2016 11:13, UK
Callum Smith is next in line for the winner of James DeGale's world title fight with Badou Jack, the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed.
The 26-year-old super-middleweight is the mandatory challenger for WBC champion Jack, who has agreed to face IBF title holder DeGale in New York on January 14.
Smith defends his British title against Luke Blackledge on the undercard of Anthony Joshua-Eric Molina, live on Sky Sports Box Office, on December 10, and he can pave the way for his expected world title fight at some point in 2017.
WBC president Sulaiman told World Boxing News. "I am happy to participate in this process of unification as fans deserve great fights.
"I accept that working together with the other organisations works for us and I will be making every effort to make sure the best fights happen.
"We are very happy to have secured a positive response from Callum Smith, our mandatory super-middleweight contender, who was willing to accept having this unification bout as he will then fight the winner."
The unbeaten Smith will make the first defence of his British title against Blackledge after winning the vacant belt with a first-round knockout win over Liverpool rival Rocky Fielding last November.
