Joe Calzaghe is pleased that Britain continues to flourish in the super-middleweight division.
James DeGale is the latest in a long line of British world champions at 168lbs and the Londoner has the opportunity to unify titles when facing WBC title holder Badou Jack in a blockbuster New York showdown in the early hours of Sunday morning, live on Sky Sports.
It is a division in which Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Richie Woodhall, Robin Reid, Carl Froch and Calzaghe himself have all prospered and achieved world glory.
Now, DeGale leads the latest crop of Brits – including George Groves and Callum Smith – in heading up the world rankings and Calzaghe is pleased to see the continued success.
Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, he said: “It is great for British boxing and great to have had so many fighters come through at the super-middleweight limit over the years.
“DeGale is leading the way and then you’ve got Groves, who has been unfortunate on a few occasions, he could have already won a world title, but I fancy him to do so soon.
“Smith looks strong and is up-and-coming, we’re just waiting for his acid test - it’s different when you fight for a world title.
“He is definitely a talent I like to watch, he punches hard and is big for the weight, so I’m very interested to see what he does.
“I think DeGale will beat Jack and then hopefully, he can come home and have some big fights here in Britain with the likes of Groves and Smith.”
Watch James DeGale v Badou Jack in a unification fight from the Barclays Center, New York, live on Sky Sports 1, 2am, Sunday, January 15.
