On two occasions previously Groves fell short when he challenged Carl Froch for world titles, and he was also beaten by Badou Jack when a world title was at stake.

However, he made no mistake this time, stopping Chudinov in the sixth round with a punishing sequence of blows.

Groves said afterwards: "I'm usually a character who likes to be well rehearsed, but this time I've got no words.

"This is the end of a lifetime's work.

"I feel like I'm the best in the division, I'm willing and ready to fight anyone."

There has been bad blood between Froch and Groves in the past but Froch was quick to congratulate his old adversary.

"I couldn't do anything other than applaud George Groves' win," Froch told Sky Sports.

"We did catch each other's eyes at the end and it just made me feel good.

"I applauded him nodding 'well done' and he looked at me and went 'thanks', as if to say that the hatchet has been buried and we can move on now."
