Jermall Charlo blasted his way to the front of the Gennady Golovkin queue with a devastating second-round knockout of Hugo Centeno Jr in New York.
The twin of super-welterweight world champion, Jermell, is now the WBC mandatory challenger to middleweight supremo Gennady Golovkin, after leaving Centeno Jr flat on his back with a lethal finish.
In the wake of the Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez suspension it remains to be seen if Charlo will get the first shot at the unbeaten star, but with Brooklyn's Barclays Center watching on, the 27-year-old at least showed he carries brutal power himself.
An even opening round suggested Charlo is by no means the finished article when it comes to timing but although Centeno Jr made a good, positive start, it all changed as soon as the second round started.
Charlo slipped in and fired off a double jab, followed by a ramrod right, that had his Californian foe in trouble. He stood his ground but a huge right to the side of his head spelled the beginning of the end and a clash of heads didn't help, before a check left hook and another right saw him crash to the canvas.
Centeno Jr laid under the ropes while referee Steve Willis administered a pointless count but thankfully he got to his feet, as the former super-welterweight world champion was firing a verbal warning to Golovkin.
"Two-time world champion... bring GG on!" he said.
"I don't event want to talk about it. Bring on GGG, Triple GG, I don't care what you call him. I am ready."
Charlo may have moved ahead of bitter American rival Daniel Jacobs. The pair clashed recently and the 'Miracle Man' fights to become Golovkin's WBA mandatory at the same New York venue next weekend, live on Sky Sports.
