Promoter says Peter match-up is possible for Brixton Bomber

Frank Maloney says Danny Williams is in sight of another world title shot. The heavyweight's new promoter believes he could be just two fights away from a showdown with current WBA boss Samuel Peter. Williams puts his British title on the line against John McDermott on Friday Fight Night on July 18 and Maloney says talks are already underway to secure him a second world title, fight following his battering at the hands of Vitali Klitschko in December 2004. The Ukrainian, who has not boxed since, is scheduled to face Peter in October and if the Nigerian Nightmare retains his belt, could well be coming to Britain for his next defence. "I spoke with Dino Duva (Peter's promoter) on Wednesday night," Maloney told skysports.com. "Obviously they've announced the Peter-Klitschko fight for Germany now, but he is very much up for bringing Peter over to Britain, he just wants to sit down and talk to me first. "If Danny can come through this one (McDermott) and have one more against a named American, then we can do the fight. That is the opinion of TV as well, to get Danny a good win here and a named American. "We've invited Dino over and providing he is available, he would like to come over to London and he would like down to sit down with me.

High-profile

"He agrees that we need a British fighter to boost the TV levels, because it is only really British and American fighters do decent TV really. "We tried to make Danny and Peter in July but we couldn't do it because TV obviously felt that Danny wasn't high-profile enough at the time." Maloney was of course the man who took Lennox Lewis to the very pinnacle of the sport at the turn of the Millennium. And in a week when unified champion Wladimir Klitschko defends the IBF and WBO titles against Tony Thompson, the Londoner believes his new charge can still make waves in the heavyweight division. "I think it's a race now for a British fighter to get to a world title fight," he said. "I believe the world heavyweight scene is very open, very weak. I've watched Danny's career for a hell of a long time and I do think that if he puts his mind to it, he can do it. He's proven he can do it."
