Unbeaten Vassell to bid for vacant Commonwealth title

Denton Vassell has landed a surprise shot at the vacant Commonwealth welterweight title against Lee Purdy on Friday April 16, live on Sky Sports. The clash will co-headline with Thomas McDonagh and Gary Woolcombe's bout for the vacant light middleweight title at Robin Park Arena in Wigan. Vassell is unbeaten in 14 professional fights and his latest triumph was a stoppage win against Kevin McCauley on the undercard of Matthew Hatton's showdown with Gianluca Branco last month. The 25-year-old is scheduled to go 12 rounds for the first time against Purdy (13-1-1) having not gone beyond six in his three-and-a-half-year career. Purdy has slightly more experience, having won and successfully defended the Southern Area welterweight title. The 22-year-old lost on points to Peter McDonagh for the title in 2008 but avenged that defeat ten months later before successfully defending the belt against Mark Douglas last November.

Champion

Thomas McDonagh, meanwhile, will bid for the Commonwealth title against former British champion Woolcombe. McDonagh (34-3-3) was narrowly outpointed by Anthony Small in his previous fight for the British and Commonwealth titles, a bout many at ringside thought he had won. The 29-year-old formerly held the WBU international light middleweight title and lost to current British champion Sam Webb on points last year. Woolcombe (28-2) stopped Marcus Portman in eight rounds to raise the British light middleweight title in 2007, but the 27-year-old was defeated by Ryan Rhodes in his first defence.
