Mexican makes his point at same venue where his father fought

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr maintained his unbeaten record with a unanimous points win over John Duddy at the Alamodome. The Mexican overcame a wobble in the sixth to dominate the middleweight contest, getting the nod 120-108, 117-111 and 116-112 on the scorecards. It was the first time the 24-year-old, who now has a 41-0-1 record, had been taken the full 12 rounds in his career. Julio Cesar Chavez led his son to the ring at a venue where he had controversially drawn with Pernell Whitaker back in 1993. However there was no doubting after the judges' marks on Saturday night, Chavez Jr having built up a sizeable lead thanks mainly to his superb jab.

Wobble

Duddy did wobble his opponent in the sixth, though the Irishman failed to cash in on his opportunity. The defeat is just the second he has suffered as a professional. "John is the toughest fighter I've faced so far," said Chavez, who is now working with trainer Freddie Roach. "He kept the pressure on and really pushed me frather than I've been to this point in my career. But I knew coming in that he was going to be challenging, and I was happy to walk away with the victory." It was Chavez's first outing since his victory over Troy Rowlands last November was changed to a no-contest when he tested positive for a banned substance. Marco Antonio Barrera was in action on the undercard in Texas, unanimously outpointing Adailton DeJesus in a 10-rounder at lightweight.
