Olympic gold medallist given shot at British title

James DeGale will fight for the British super-middleweight title against Paul Smith in Liverpool on December 11. The Olympic gold medalist currently owns an 8-0 record and recorded an impressive first-round stoppage against Carl Dilks in his last outing. But the 24-year-old will be making a step-up in class when he faces Smith (29-1), who suffered his only defeat in a close contest with Steve Bendall. Smith clinched the British title by beating fellow Liverpool fighter Tony Quigley last October and the champion will enjoy home advantage at the Echo Arena.

Class

"It's a big step up in class because Paul Smith is the best super-middleweight in Britain," DeGale said. "I used to watch him when we were in the England camp and I've seen him grow during his seven years as a pro. "Of course it's a risky fight at this stage in my career but I have confidence in myself and my ability. I think I can win. "I've got to go into the lion's den and prove I'm the best super-middleweight in the country already. I've been calling him out and I've wanted to fight for the British title, so now here's my chance." Since turning professional in February 2009, DeGale has stopped six of the eight opponents he has faced.
