Successful heavyweight debut for ex-175lb champion

Antonio Tarver made a successful debut as a heavyweight on Friday night, earning a 10-round decision over Nagy Aguilera of the Dominican Republic. The 41-year-old American tipped the scales at a pudgy 221lbs in his first fight since May last year, when he lost on points to Chad Dawson for a second time. Tarver, bidding to become only the fourth light-heavyweight champion in history to claim a portion of the heavyweight title, outclassed his opponent with three scores of 98-92. The veteran appeared to suffer a shoulder injury early in the fight and was unable to floor the durable Aguilera. "I feel I looked great,'' said Tarver, now 28-6. "There was no ring rust. I didn't get hit much. I didn't get hurt. "I'll get the shoulder diagnosed, but it didn't affect me. I wasn't going to let it affect me. I did what I had to do and stuck to my game plan. I'm back and I'm here to stay. I'm a heavyweight now. The magic still lives.''
