Third time lucky as Michael answers last-minute SOS call

Michael Lomax has stepped in to face Frankie Gavin on Saturday night. The Prizefighter winner and British welterweight title challenger has answered an SOS from Frank Warren and will now feature in the top-of-the-bill clash at the York Hall. It will be a case of third time lucky for Gavin, who saw his original fight scrapped and then watched on as replacement Jason Cook failed to make the check weight on Wednesday. The former world amateur champion had been promoted to the top of the bill after Tony Bellew was forced to withdraw from his Commonwealth light-heavyweight defence against Ovill McKenzie with a hand injury. "It's been a very frustrating few days with various people pulling out, but the show is one hundred per cent on," said Warren. Lomax will provide a stern test of Gavin's professional credentials having lost just three times in 21 pro fights, all to decent opposition in Craig Watson, Kell Brook and Bradley Pryce - the latter a points defeat in his last outing in November. The 32-year-old was crowned Prizefighter Welterweight champion in October following wins over Craig Dickson, Nigel Wright and Ted Bami. Saturday night's bill also features a cracking heavyweight clash between Larry 'The War Machine' Olabuwimo and 'Big Bad' John McDermott, for the Southern Area title.
