WBA champion on course for unification fight
Yuriorkis Gamboa retained his WBA featherweight title with a stunning fourth round knockout victory over Jorge Solis in Atlantic City.
The Cuban exile took his professional record to 20-0 with 16 knockouts after putting Solis down five times in his fourth defence of the strap.
The 29-year-old, who claimed Olympic gold in 2004 before defecting to the US along with heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis two years later, dropped his opponent twice in round two with a left hook and an overhand right.
Another left hook sent Solis down again towards the end of the third and there was no escape for the challenger early in the next, pinned by a straight right.
Gamboa went for the finish this time, cornering the 31-year-old before the referee called it off.
"It was a very good fight," he said through an interpreter. "I am completely different - the package is complete. I'll fight anyone now."
Gamboa is now on course to fight WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez, who will defend his title against Orlando Salido in his native Puerto Rico next month.
If the unbeaten Lopez comes through that, a massive unification fight is on the cards for the summer.
"I've never said no and he's never said no," said Lopez, who joined Gamboa in the ring after the fight. "We have to negotiate it. We're the best in the division. We have to do it."
