WBC heavyweight champion stops opponent in 10th round

Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight title on Saturday night when he stopped Tomasz Adamek in the 10th round of their contest in Wroclaw. The elder of the Ukrainian boxing brothers delivered a performance even more dominant than that given by sibling Wladimir when he beat David Haye in July and Italian referee Massimo Barrovecchio could really have halted the fight a couple of rounds earlier. Home favourite Adamek made no impact at all in the first three rounds, the Pole seemingly rattled by the power of Klitschko's jab. He offered more in the fourth and indeed gave Klitschko a few uncomfortable moments, but the 40-year-old was still well in control. Klitschko underlined his dominance in the sixth when he unleashed a big right-hander that sent Adamek tumbling into the ropes, with the referee judging it a knockdown. The champion was himself on the canvas himself at the end of the eighth, though it was by virtue of a stumble rather than anything his opponent could offer. Then with Adamek barely able to stay on his feet in the 10th, Barrovecchio belatedly stepped in.
