Mexican legend Erik Morales stopped Pablo Cesar Cano at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to become a four-weight world champion.
'El Terrible' has enough left to stop Cano
Erik Morales stopped Pablo Cesar Cano in Las Vegas on Saturday night to claim the vacant WBC light-welterweight title and become a four-weight world champion.
Cano's corner mercifully pulled him out after round 10 at the MGM Grand with both of his eyes swelling and his face a bloody mess.
That decision came at the end of a big session for 'El Terrible', who was landing at will with his opponent struggling to see the punches coming.
Morales (now 52-7) came in looking soft around the mid-section and made a slow start as Cano - 14 years his junior - held sway in the early stages with superior speed and workrate.
But gradually Morales, showing the heart of a champion and just the occasional flash of brilliance, started to turn the fight around.
In his pomp 'El Terrible's' right hand was one of the sweet science's sweetest punches, and the longer the fight went the more it was in evidence.
Cut
A cut over the left eye of Cano (now 22-1-1) appeared to give Morales heart and the living Mexican legend targeted it to great effect.
As the cut worsened the 10th round proved pivotal. Midway through the session a double right hand and a left hook in quick succession clearly hurt Cano and brought blood spurting from his face.
The doctor assessed his wounds but allowed him to go on, but once he returned to the corner his seconds rightly called a halt, allowing Morales to crown his comeback with a fourth world title.
