Former WBC champion may have to undergo surgery

Andre Berto has been forced to call off his much-anticipated rematch against Victor Ortiz after suffering an arm injury in training. The 28-year-old ruptured his left biceps while sparring and may be forced to undergo surgery this week, meaning the February 11bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has been postponed. The first fight between the two last April saw both of them visit the canvas, before Ortiz secured a unanimous points decision victory to take the WBC welterweight belt from his opponent. Since then Berto has fought once, recording a comfortable victory over Jan Zaveck to claim the IBF crown and stretch his professional record to 28-1. However he opted to give up that title in order to get a second crack at Ortiz, the only man to so far beat him in the professional ranks. Ortiz, meanwhile, lost the belt to Floyd Mayweather last September; he was controversially knocked out by the unbeaten American after being deducted a point for a headbutt. It set him up for the biggest fight of his career against Floyd Mayweather last September, but Ortiz was stopped in the fourth round.
