Eye cut denies Anderson shot at British and Commonwealth belts

George Groves has pulled out of his domestic showdown with Kenny Anderson on September 14 after suffering a cut near his eye. The 24-year-old was injured above his right eye during the third round of his stoppage victory over Mexican Francisco Sierra. The London fighter ended Sierra's challenge in the sixth round of the bout in San Jose, California in the early hours of Sunday morning. But the cut will prevent him from defending his British and Commonwealth titles against Anderson at Wembley Arena next month. It is the latest injury setback for Groves, who until Sunday had been inactive since November because of back and nose injuries. Following Groves' withdrawal the event on September 14 event will now take place at York Hall. Billy Joe Saunders has been promoted to the top of the bill with a mandatory defence of his Commonwealth Middleweight Championship title against unbeaten Australian Jarrod Fletcher.
