Two-weight champion poised for crack at 140lb strap

Former two-time world champion Joan Guzman will face an unnamed opponent for the vacant WBA light-welterweight title. With Danny Garcia awarded 'super-champion' status by the sanctioning body, Guzman was named as mandatory challenger to interim champion Pablo Cesar Cano. However, Cano has opted to step up to welterweight to take on WBA champion Paulie Malignaggi on October 20 leaving Guzman in prime position for the 140lb strap. It is almost five years since Dominican Guzman held the WBO super-featherweight title, since when his career has taken on roller-coaster proportions. Hand injuries and weight problems have marred his progress, failing by some way to make 135lb for a title fight two years ago, before being banned later in 2010 for failed a doping test for use of a diuretic. The still-unbeaten 36-year-old has won three fights since his return at the 140lb limit, albeit against sub-standard opposition.
