Gamboa could be next for Mexican super-featherweight champion

Juan Carlos Salgado retained his IBF super-featherweight title with a unanimous point victory over Jonathan Barrios in Puebla, Mexico. Salgado, making his third defence of the strap, dominated the action despite suffering a cut early in the fight owing to a clash of heads. Barros kept himself in the contest with occasional right hands and left hooks but the Mexican's flurries ensured the judges sided with him at the end. The champion was dominant late on, with Barros taking a lot of punishment on the ropes in the ninth and 10th rounds in particular. And with scores of 115-112 and 116-111 twice, Salgado can now look forward to a potentially lucrative clash with the unbeaten former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. The Cuban, fighting under Floyd Mayweather's TMT Promotions, is rumoured to be in line for a November clash with Salgado with the winner taking on current mandatory challenger Argenis Mendez.
