Muhammad Ali released from hospital following recovery from urinary tract infection

Muhammad Ali has been has been released from hospital after recovering from an infection.

The 72-year-old, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, was hospitalised in December with what was initially believed to be a mild case of pneumonia, but later emerged to be a severe urinary tract infection.

“He is looking forward to celebrating his 73rd birthday on January 17 with family and friends. The Ali family appreciates the outpouring of support and well wishes.”

Ali, who also won an Olympic gold medal in 1960, made a rare public appearance in September to attend a ceremony in Louisville, Kentucky, for the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards.   

He was diagnosed with Parkinson's around three years after retiring from boxing in 1981.
