Johnny Nelson has backed former world super-middleweight champion Carl Froch on his decision to retire from boxing and join the Sky Sports team...

I sort of knew Carl was going to retire.

When you're an ex-fighter, common sense tells you that for a guy who's been on top of the hill, it takes a lot to get you out of bed to get you up at stupid o'clock every morning to go for a run.

You need someone who's going to put the fear of God in to you and I can kind of understand where he was at.

If Carl Froch wasn't going to get the fights he wanted, I understand the desire to push himself wasn't there any longer.

I think he has made the right decision.

It’s hard for people to accept but we are talking about one of the best British fighters of all time. People will shoot me down and go way back in to history but we’ve just got to embrace the fact Froch is in our era and he is one of the best.

Johnny Nelson

His record says it all. He boxed the best around at the time so yes, he’s one of the best British fighters. Regardless of how much you wrestle with the idea, it’s fact. The amount of fighters he’s faced who were at the top and the results he produced.

Comparisons with Joe Calzaghe will always get made but I think those comparisons are unfair because the fight didn’t get made. They both need respect.

Again, Joe is another excellent example of a British fighter and they were in the same division. They were both world beaters but you can't argue over spilt milk – they never fought each other and that's just how it is.

It’s the perfect move for Carl and he’s going out right at the top. He sets an example for young fighters coming through. Lennox Lewis is another fighter who went out at the top. All respect to him.

Carl is the perfect addition to the Sky Sports team.

He's not going to be swayed by anyone so you either like him or loathe him. That's what you want – someone who'll say it how it is.

He's got the respect from the public because he's been there and done it. He's one of our best who've stood on top of that hill.

Anyone who knows Carl will know there's no nonsense with him. He's black and white about things. That's why I think he'll be a perfect addition to our Sky team.
