Martin Murray won by stoppage against veteran Mirzet Bajrektraevic in a straightforward super-middleweight success in Manchester.

The St Helens puncher, a long-time middleweight, endured few difficulties as he moved up a weight class although there were question marks surrounding the ending of the eight-round fight.

In the fifth, with Murray having established a clear dominance in hand speed and punch power, the referee stepped in front of Bajrektarevic to save him from any more shots. The Croatian complained at the decision and the crowd seemed bemused although there was little sign of Murray’s control being challenged in the next three rounds.

Tyrone Nurse and Chris Jenkins fought to a 12-round majority decision draw meaning the British light-welterweight championship remained vacant.

Nurse’s rangy, counter-punching style met Jenkins’ brave, pressuring method but the judges couldn’t separate their efforts at the conclusion of a rugged, tiring bout. One judge gave Nurse a 117-112 win but the other two had it level.

Nurse had earlier opened a bad cut above Jenkins’ eye but the undefeated Welshman couldn’t be deterred from striding forwards and forcing a competitive scrap that ultimately couldn’t yield a winner.

Sam Eggington earned his second belt by forcing Glenn Foot to be halted before the ninth round of their vacant British welterweight title clash.
