Jono Carroll was crowned as the Prizefighter lightweight champion after a classy points win over Michael Devine in the final at York Hall.

The 22-year-old Irishman headed into the tournament as a three-fight novice, but has burst onto the domestic scene after taking a unanimous verdict against Devine with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Dreams come true, I'm on cloud nine... cloud 10 even - you know what I mean. This is brilliant, this is unbelievable. My whole Christmas, this isn't going to sink in.

Carroll unloaded clusters of punches in the first round, catching his opponent with a decent right, and then a looping left hook.

Trying to stem the tide, Devine rattled home punches to the ribs in the second. The Dublin man stood his ground, firing back defiantly, but earned a ticking off for punching on the break.

Both men swapped punches in the final round as a gruelling night reached its conclusion, but Carroll applied the finishing touches with a crisp right counter.

Earlier in the night, the 'Celtic Warrior' had elimated two respected veterans, firstly defeating Stephen Foster Jr on points in the quarter-final, and then edging past former Prizefighter champion Gary Buckland in the semi-finals.

Buckland's exit appeared contentious, with his superior work-rate appearing to trouble Carroll, but he was still awarded a split-decision victory by the judges.

There was an explosive end to the other semi as Devine detonated a left hook which left Lee Martin crumpled on the canvas. After a worrying few seconds, the Essex man was helped to his feet and Devine could celebrate a place in the final.

Danny Cassius Connor had been drawn against Devine in the quarter-finals, forcing them to face each for a second time in a matter of months. The first fight had ended in a draw after Connor suffered a cut, but Devine was keen to settle unfinished business and floored his rival on the way to a points win.

In the other quarter-finals, Martin outworked Craig Whyatt to earn a decision, while Buckland inflicted a one-sided beating on Floyd Moore to secure a clear points win.
