'Big Time' handed another title shot

WBC interim heavyweight champion Sam Peter will take on Jameel McCline at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 6. Peter was due to take on reigning WBC champion Oleg Maskaev, but the Russian pulled out of the fight last week with a back injury. With Maskaev inactive since December, the organisation has given Peter interim status with Maskaev taking on the winner of next week's fight providing he recovers fitness. McCline had been slated to take on the returning Vitali Klitschko last weekend before the former WBC champ suffered a back injury.

Obvious man

The 37-year-old was then booked to fight Davarryl Williamson on the Maskaev-Peter undercard, but when that fight was pulled McCline was the obvious man to step up. 'Big Time' has been unable to shake off his 'contender' status after losing no less than three world title challenges - the latest coming in January when a twisted knee forced him to quit in the third round against then WBA belt holder Nikolai Valuev. He came closest in 2004 when he dropped IBF champion Chris Byrd in the second round before Byrd came back to edge a split decision. Williamson will now fight Australian Kali Meehan on the Garden undercard with Meehan rebuilding his career after losing his WBO title to Lamon Brewster in 2004. Another 10-round heavyweight contest at the Garden will see notorious Pole Andrew Golota take on former Mike Tyson conqueror Kevin McBride.
