Pretty Boy's pal KO'd by the Cherry Bomb

Team Mayweather's evening got off to the worst possible start as Wes Ferguson was knocked out by Edner Cherry. The Pretty Boy's stablemate, with trainer Roger Mayweather in his corner, was floored twice in the sixth, the second blow signalling his third defeat - and his second to the same man in six months. With Floyd watching on from a dressing-room feed Ferguson began the rematch with the look of a man that was out to right the wrongs of his unanimous points loss in June. But his early momentum did not last long, Cherry's longer reach keeping him at a distance and his wide, looping hooks giving his foe plenty of food for thought. There was a sign of things to come in the second when Cherry opened up and caught Ferguson not once but twice with hammering rights. Wobbled, he came through the session, but sat down on his stool with the look of a man who now knew, if he didn't before, that he was in for a tough night. Cherry continued to hold sway, his hooks dominating what few scoring punches there were for the next couple of rounds, the fight moving around the ring and the man they call Cherry Bomb getting the better of the brief exchanges. But the sixth round broke the pattern and Ferguson's resistance and gave Team Mayweather plenty to ponder on their big night. Just as Ferguson was coming forward again, Cherry whipped a short left hook flush onto his chin and left him flat on his back. He beat the count comfortably and looked as if his head has cleared as the end of the round approached. But Cherry had sensed the end was in sight and with just a second of the stanza left, caught him flush with another left. This time it ricocheted off Ferguson's right glove, but careered full into his face and once again, he was on his back. He tried to beat the second count, but clearly in trouble, collapsed face down again, to give Cherry only his 11th KO in 23 fights. And it also gave Floyd food for thought.
