Chicago-based Pole overcomes eye injury

Andrew Golota could be on the verge of another world title fight following a courageous points victory over fringe contender Mike Mollo in New York. The outlandish Pole, who had three successive title fights for different belts within the space of a year, overcame a serious eye injury to beat his American opponent via a unanimous decision. "I hope nobody ever calls me a quitter again," said Golota, whose colourful career has seen him suffer two disqualification losses to Riddick Bowe, a title defeat to Lennox Lewis 11 years ago and a no contest against Mike Tyson when he refused to fight. "I couldn't see anything after round eight. I had to box more by feel. He was much faster than I thought." The 40-year-old finished the fight with his left eye completely closed after dominating the middle rounds, using his superior height and 17lb weight advantage to smother an opponent 13 years his junior. "I couldn't believe the number of combinations he threw," said Mollo, who was ranked eighth by the WBA but slips to 19-2. "I fought the best I could." Golota has now won three fights since returning to the ring in June following a two year sabbatical and could now be in line to challenge for Ruslan Chagaev's belt. There were also wins on the Jones-Trinidad undercard for former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo and rising star Devon Alexander, who sent Demarcus Corley into a likely retirement with a points win. Canada's Steve Molitor remained unbeaten when retaining the International Boxing Federation super bantamweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision over Mexico's Ricardo Castillo.
