Boxing: Muhammad Ali has returned home after receiving treatment in hospital

A spokesman for Muhammad Ali says the boxing great has been released from hospital after receiving follow-up care for a sever urinary tract infection.

The three-time former world heavyweight champion, who is one of the most iconic sporting figures in history, has twice had to stay in hospital over the last four weeks.

However, family spokesman Bob Gunnell says Ali left the undisclosed hospital on Friday and has returned to one of his homes.

And Gunnell added that Ali is now looking forward to celebrating his 73rd birthday on Saturday with family and friends.

"The Ali family greatly appreciates the outpouring of support and continued well wishes," said Gunnell.

Ali was hospitalized late last month with what was initially believed to be a mild case of pneumonia.

However, doctors later determined he was suffering from a urinary tract infection and he was released from hospital on January 7 after a two-week stay.

Ali, also a former Olympic gold medallist, has suffered from Parkinson's disease since the 1980s.
