Lightweight could step up to take on World champion

Amir Khan may be gunning for the WBO lightweight belt later this year but he is already eyeing a domestic showdown with light-welterweight champion Gavin Rees. The undefeated Rees defends his WBA strap in March and Khan is hoping the Welshman holds on to it for a little while longer as he has unfinished business at 135lbs. "I think I'm ready to face Gavin Rees in the next fight or two. He suits my style," he said. "But I want to stay at lightweight for another year or so and then move up. "I want to win everything in the lightweight division - the European belt and then the world titles." The Olympic silver medallist has all-but ruled out a fight with Ricky Hatton, believing the two-time world champion will have retired by the time he becomes a light-welterweight. The Bolton Bomber has defended his Commonwealth title three times but takes on Denmark's Martin Kristjansen next in a WBO title eliminator. Kristjansen has won 19 of his 23 fights, stopping just five opponents, but Khan will not be taking him lightly. "Kristjansen is tough. I saw him box for the European title against Stefano Zoff in 2005 and he gave him a tough fight," Khan added. "In fact I think Kristjansen won that fight. He has a different style to (Gairy) St Clair and he's tough. "He's only been beaten once. He's ranked number two by the WBO - and if I beat him, well then, who knows?"
