Cuban southpaw could face Nate Campbell after impressive win
Joel Casamayor put an end to Michael Katsidis' unbeaten record with a 10th round stoppage in their duel in California.
Victory for the 36-year-old Cuban gives him the WBO lightweight interim title and improves his professional record to 36-3-1.
He twice had his opponent down in the first round but was forced to wait to finish the job, referee Jon Schorle having to step in to halt the bout with Katsidis in trouble.
The Australian had recovered from the early knockdowns to take control of the bout only to be tagged with a powerful left as he moved forward.
Although he did climb up off the canvas for a third time he came under heavy punishment, leaving the official with no choice but to wave the fight off.
Focus
"I just wasted it on my youth. I got stupid," he said afterwards. "I got excited at the last minute and got caught.
"What can I say? I did my best. I had to focus to win that fight. I didn't. I will take that one down to experience and keep going to the end."
While Katsidis reflects on a first loss Casamayor, who was deducted a point in the ninth round for a low blow, wasted little time in calling out some high profile names.
His major target is a showdown with Manny Pacquiao, who is due to make the move up from super featherweight to take on WBC champion David Diaz this summer.
Instead Casamayor could face Nate Campbell, a boxer he feels would not prove much of a challenge despite the fact the American holds the IBF, WBA and WBO belts.
"I would beat Campbell with three weeks of training," the southpaw said. "Now I want Pacquiao. I want Barrera. That's what I'm looking for, big money fights."
