Jessie Vargas on Kell Brook's decision to face Gennady Golovkin

Jessie Vargas understands Kell Brook's decision to abandon talks over a unification bout to step up and face Gennady Golovkin.

WBO world welterweight champion Vargas (27-1-KO10) had agreed to face IBF king Brook (36-0-KO25) only for 'The Special One' to announce he will step up two weight divisions to face unified middleweight boss Golovkin.

Brook elected to fight Golovkin after Chris Eubank Jr missed promoter Eddie Hearn's deadline to sign a contract to face the Kazakh and Vargas told behindthegloves.com: "I had a signed contract but he elected to go another way, which I understand.

"It's a bigger pay-day for him and it's win-win because he goes up two divisions but he's still welterweight champion.

"Win or lose, he'll come back down to welterweight and defend his title. I don't see Brook winning because Triple G is the bigger man but hopefully he'll put up a good fight because his fans will respect and enjoy it if he does that.

"I think that possibly they had the idea of fighting Golovkin because they stated it in the past several months before. It took me less than two weeks to sign a contract and it took him two months and still no contract. It then took him only two days to sign to fight Triple G.

Brook says he never backs down from a challenge

"Only he knows if he planned to really fight me or if he planned to fight Triple G for a big pay-day. It made it a big deal with Chris Eubank Jr, Triple G, Jessie Vargas and Brook. Then they switched it up and gave the boxing world a big surprise. If that's what they were planning, they did a great job of executing it."

Vargas may yet find himself with a big-name opponent next up. The 27-year-old Californian has been mentioned by Manny Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum as a possible opponent for the legendary Filipino's comeback fight on November 5.

Golovkin on coming to the UK to fight Brook

Vargas said: "I'm hoping for the biggest fight possible. I want to fight the best fighters possible so I can prove to my fans that I'm the best in the division and for that, I have to fight them all.

"I'll fight anybody. Everyone knows that. I was ready to go to England to fight Brook in his hometown. Now I'm willing to fight Danny Garcia, Pacquiao and the rest. I tried calling out Garcia but for some reason, it's not happening.

"Pacquiao is another great fighter that I'd love to face because it would show my fans the level of talent I have and what I'm capable of."

Vargas has not fought since March, when he won the vacant WBO title by stopping Sadam Ali inside nine rounds in Washington.
