Former P4P king wants a piece of the action in Wales

Roy Jones wants to fight Joe Calzaghe following the Welshman's win over Bernard Hopkins. The former pound-for-pound king says he is even willing to travel to Cardiff for what would be a stellar showdown later this year. Calzaghe climbed off the canvas to out-point Hopkins in Las Vegas on Saturday in his move up to light-heavyweight - where Jones ruled the roost for six years before losing to Antonio Tarver (twice) and Glencoffe Johnson. Jones has won all three of his fights since and believes he is now ready to return to the big time in front of a bumper crowd at the Millennium Stadium. "I would love to fight Joe in front of all those fans in Wales," he said. "I hope we will have the deal done next week to fight on November 15. "I would see it as the best moment of my career. I am confident despite all I have achieved that my best moments are ahead of me."

Ambassador

As promoter Frank Warren has pointed out, Calzaghe openly chased a match-up with Jones when he was at the peak of his powers in the late 1990's, but to no avail. The fighter himself is taking a break following the Hopkins fight, but refused to rule out another big-name fight before calling it quits. But he says, Jones would go the same way as 'The Executioner' should they finally meet. "Roy Jones is a tremendous ambassador for the sport and he can still fight," he said. "He's still got that speed and that bit of magic there. But I've beaten one legend tonight and I'll beat another one." Jones was the undisputed light-heavyweight champion between 1997 and 2003 and is the only man to have won a world heavyweight title after doing the same at middleweight. His bubble was burst with those three successive losses in 2004 but he has since launched a comeback, struggling past Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw before showing some flashes of brilliance in out-pointing Felix Trinidad in January.
Tarver also wants in
Meanwhile, IBF light-heavyweight world champion Tarver has joined the list of fighters courting Calzaghe, claiming he is willing to fight the Welshman "wherever he wants". Tarver's victory over Clinton Woods last weekend saw him reclaim the IBF title and the Florida fighter is now seeking to topple Calzaghe, whose victory, while not for an official title, nevertheless moved him to the top of the 175lb division. Tarver, who lost to Hopkins in 2006, said: "Everyone was mentioned as Calzaghe's potential next opponent but me, the true light-heavyweight world champion. "I am the real 'legend killer'. I beat Roy Jones not once but twice. "I have also beaten Glen Johnson, Clinton Woods and many more top fighters in the light-heavyweight division. "I am the only light-heavyweight champion who currently holds two belts and on my way to unifying the belts this year. "I will fight Calzaghe in the US, in the UK or wherever he wants to fight."
