Kelly Pavlik and his team are hoping to lure Joe Calzaghe back down to super-middleweight after the American retained his unbeated record against Gary Lockett on Saturday night.
'The Ghost' stopped the Welshman inside three rounds in Atlantic City to continue his remarkable knockout record of 30 in 34 fights and keep his WBC and WBO middleweight straps.
Pavlik could prove a real handful for the undefeated Calzaghe if able to carry that power up to super-middleweight, and he proved strong enough to beat Jermain Taylor at a catchweight of 164lbs in their re-match in February.
But Calzaghe recently moved up to light-heavyweight for the first time to beat Bernard Hopkins, and is looking for another fight at 175lb limit against Roy Jones Jr.
Pavlik's trainer Jack Loew is confident his man would be too good for Calzaghe if the pair do get in the ring together.
He told
The Times: "We'd love to fight Joe Calzaghe, it's a good fight but it's up to Top Rank and Bob Arum.
"Kelly will fight anyone they put in front of him. If he stays at middleweight, he stays at middleweight. I think Calzaghe is the only fight that we would leave middleweight for now.
"Calzaghe catches a lot of right hands. Bernard Hopkins put him on his ass and I think if Kelly catches him on the chin he won't have a chance."
