Welshman to handle own affairs after terminating 12-year tie-up

Joe Calzaghe has announced he has split from promoter Frank Warren. The long-reigning world champion has ended his 12-year association with Sports Network and intends to manage himself from now on. It means Calzaghe, still undefeated after 45 fights and a world title holder for 11 years, will conduct his own negotiations for his next fight, a showdown with former pound-for-pounder Roy Jones Jr - and not middleweight king Kelly Pavlik. "I am now a free agent with no contract and intend to be self-managed from now on," he told the South Wales Argus. "I am the only person who can make negotiations for my next fight. Regarding that fight, I am not in negotiations with Kelly Pavlik, despite reports to the contrary. "My intention is to fight Roy Jones Jnr, a four-weight world champion fighter. "That would be a special event for me against a legend of the sport. There are issues to be resolved with my former promoter Frank Warren and I hope they can be done so amicably." Warren had hinted that Calzaghe, who defeated Bernard Hopkins in his American debut in April, could join him in the promotional game once he had retired as a fighter. The decision means a future tie-up is unlikely and sees the Welshman follow Ricky Hatton in leaving Warren's Sports Network stable to handle his own affairs - and fight in the United States.
