Former champion sets sights on a second British belt

Lenny Daws is out to win the British light-welterweight title back. The Morden man takes on France's Mihaita Mutu at the York Hall on Friday night, but has one eye on another crack at the belt he held briefly back in 2006. Current champion David Barnes defends against Barry Morrison - the only man to defeat Daws as a professional - on July 4 and the former champion says he will be ready and waiting for the winner. "This is a chance for me to show I'm ready for another shot," he said. "Mutu has got an eight round points win over Barry Morrison, who fights David Barnes for the British title a week after my fight, so he is no mug. "If I can look good against Mutu, it will help my chances of fighting the winner of Barnes-Morrison or may be get me an eliminator." Daws is back in the ring for the first time in seven months. He is still adamant he should now be the English title holder after his battle with Nigel Wright was deemed a draw, but is determined to put that behind him and kickstart his career at the age of 29. "I was a little bit disappointed with my draw against Nigel Wright for the English Title last time out in November because I thought I did enough to win," he said. "But this fight will get me sharpened up and it will not be easy because he (Mutu) has challenged for the European title before. "I want to get the win over him and then be ready for anyone, anytime."
