British veteran could take on WBC champion
Danny Williams is on the verge of another world title shot, according to promoter Frank Maloney.
The Brixton Bomber, who defends his British title against 'Big' John McDermott on July 18, is being lined up as a possible opponent for WBC champion Samuel Peter.
Maloney says he has been in talks with American promoter Dino Duva over a possible autumn showdown and sees this month's fight in Dagenham as an eliminator.
"We were close to making a fight between Danny and Peter for this month, but TV schedules didn't work out," he said.
"Danny's defence against John is now virtually a world title eliminator and a big punch could land one of them the jackpot.
"Danny has been revitalised in his last four fights, and is still known in America for his amazing win over Tyson and incredible bravery against Vitali Klitschko."
It is now four years since the enigmatic Williams defeated Tyson before losing to WBC champion Klitschko in his only shot at the world title to date.
His career was at a crossroads following successive defeats to Matt Skelton and Audley Harrison, but the 34-year-old dropped almost 3st in weight prior to stopping Scott Gammer to re-claim the British title in March last year.
And the bandwagon rolled on in Spain five weeks ago when he overcame outrageously biased refereeing and three knockdowns to stop the previously unbeaten and dangerous Konstantin Airich in seven rounds.
Williams (39-6) will enter his British title defence as a hot favourite with the limited, if heavy-handed, McDermott (25-3) having spent the majority of his career fighting at a lower level.
